Self-confidence is the first secret to success. It is very important for parents to train their children to be confident. If the children believe in themselves, they will accomplish their goals and achieve great things. Building confidence in children is one of the most important steps teachers and parents can take to ensure an atmosphere for learning. When a child loses self-esteem, they may lose motivation in learning. Parents can help to improve a child’s self-confidence by giving children many opportunities to practise and master their skills. Each child is different so there is no one set “recipe”.

Intelligent Education Group is sharing some guidelines which can help to build your child’s confidence.

1) Give them responsibilities

Giving a child household duties will help them feel more valuable and channel their energy into desirable behaviour. They can sweep the floor, clean up toys, fold laundry or even wash the dishes. Doing chores gives a child the opportunity to give back to their parents for all you do for them. They will see themselves as important contributors to the family.

2) Encourage practice to build competence

Encourage children to practice whatever it is they're interested in but don’t put too much pressure on them. Nurturing strengths is better than focusing on weaknesses if you want to help kids feel good about themselves and succeed.

3) Praise effort rather than fixed qualities

Be careful about praising children too much because it does not make them work harder or do better. We should avoid focusing praise on results or fixed qualities (such as being smart). This kind of praise can lead kids to avoid challenges and they are easily discouraged when something is too difficult for them. Thus, it is better to praise effort, progress and attitude but not the end-results.

4) Teach your child to become a problem-solver

Help them work through problems instead of solving them for your child. As a parent, you need to guide your children in their problem-solving efforts, but do not do the task for them. You should encourage your children, but do not let them depend on you.

5) Never Criticize their performance

Nothing will discourage your child more than criticizing his or her efforts. Giving useful feedback and making suggestions is fine, but never tell them they're doing a bad job. If your kid is scared to fail because they worry you'll be angry, they'll never try new things.
